Why can't my problem be fixed in a few visits? Part 2

Posted on 2009-09-24 12:21:50

In the investigative part of our exams, through diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, we find that most people’s spinal health issues describe a different picture.  An x-ray tells the physician a lot about an individual’s spinal health in past, present and future tense.  Example: degenerative disc disease, degenerative joint disease, scoliosis, spondylothesis are frequent indicators seen on an x-ray.  These conditions take many years to develop and usually start without symptoms.  There may be a specific accident or incident that the patient remembered that started the spinal problem, but in most cases the patient heals from the trauma and the symptoms go away.  This is where patients feel they are better and “fixed” from their problems.  The problem with this is, if the spinal or joint injury never healed properly, over time the condition will worsen and end up degenerative.  The point of the matter is this, most conditions that are presented in a chiropractic office are chronic in nature and if the condition is acute prior to their visit, the condition was chronic and getting progressively worse before they noticed the symptoms.  Understanding these concepts first, and revealing these conditions to the patient, will support the reasoning behind treatment plans and why one or two visits don’t fix the condition.  More next time!

Why can't my problem be fixed in a few visits? Part 1

This is a question I hear on a frequent basis from new patients. We live in a society of “fast” everything. We want fast access on the computer, fast communications, fast food, quick remedies to lose weight, and fast medical treatments for our ailments. We want to go to our doctor taking no responsibility for our own health care, looking for the quick miracle pill and latest surgery that may or may not help the cause of the health problem. As I reflect on this thought, we are all found guilty of this thinking. The times we live in, the technological advances that we see yearly, help support this kind of thinking. So to answer the first question, you have to understand basic principles of the human body related to the mechanics of the spine. In most cases, health issues in general do not start overnight. In investigating our health problems, most cases develop over many years even though they may not be symptomatic. Did you hear this? Yes, you could have a problem brewing for many years within your body with out a single symptom. You could have cancer, a heart condition or diabetes today, and not have a symptom until the condition progressively gets worse. So is the lack of symptoms a great indicator of our state of health? More next time!
